Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in Markham: What Healthcare Professionals Need to Know

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in Markham

If your job requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification in Markham, you need training designed for professionals who have a duty to respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies. BLS goes beyond general CPR training by emphasizing rapid assessment, high-quality CPR, AED use, airway obstruction response, assisted ventilation, and working as part of a team.

At Heart2Heart First Aid CPR, we provide Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support certification in Markham for healthcare and other professional responders who need BLS training. Our Markham location offers BLS courses and BLS recertification, and our Red Cross programs are WSIB approved.

Is BLS the Same as CPR?

No. BLS and standard CPR/AED training are not the same course.

CPR/AED training is designed for a broad range of participants who need to learn how to respond to cardiac emergencies. BLS is specifically designed to build confidence and competence in CPR within a team environment for professionals with a duty to respond.

The Canadian Red Cross identifies BLS audiences such as in-facility healthcare providers, including nursing staff, care aides, medical and dental professionals. It can also apply to certain pre-hospital care providers, including professionals working in fire services, rescue teams, sports medicine, lifeguarding, and ski patrol.

That difference is important if you are taking CPR or first aid certification as a prerequisite for employment, school, licensing, or another professional requirement.

The safest approach is always to confirm the exact course required by your employer, school, regulatory body, or organization before registering.

What Do You Learn in a BLS Course?

BLS training focuses on what professional responders need to do when a person experiences a serious medical emergency.

The Canadian Red Cross BLS course includes primary assessment, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, airway obstruction response, assisted ventilation, and special considerations for Basic Life Support. Participants also learn glove removal as part of the course content.

The emphasis is on responding efficiently and appropriately.

In a cardiac emergency, a professional responder may need to assess the situation, begin CPR, coordinate with another responder, use an AED, and provide ventilation using the appropriate equipment and technique. BLS training gives participants an opportunity to practice these skills rather than simply reading about them.

This is why BLS should not be treated as simply “another CPR certificate.” It is structured around the needs of professional responders.

Why Is Team-Based BLS Training Important?

BLS places particular emphasis on CPR in a team environment.

In professional healthcare settings, emergencies may involve more than one responder. Effective communication, role coordination, rapid assessment, and appropriate use of equipment can all be part of the response.

Training in a team environment gives participants the opportunity to practice responding with others instead of learning every skill in isolation.

For someone working in a medical, dental, nursing, care, sports, or emergency-response environment, this practical component can make BLS training particularly relevant to the situations they may encounter professionally.

At Heart2Heart, we focus on hands-on learning so participants can practice the required skills with an instructor and build confidence in their ability to respond.

What Is the Difference Between BLS and Standard First Aid?

This is another important distinction.

Standard/Intermediate First Aid and BLS serve different training purposes. First aid courses cover a broader range of injuries and medical emergencies, while BLS concentrates on life-support skills for professional responders.

If your school or employer specifically asks for BLS certification, registering for a general CPR course or first aid course may not meet that requirement.

Similarly, if you are required to have workplace first aid certification, a BLS course should not automatically be assumed to replace the first aid certification your workplace requires.

The Canadian Red Cross advises learners to choose courses based on workplace legislation, employer requirements, professional needs, or school prerequisites.

Before registering, check the exact wording of your requirement. If it says Basic Life Support, make sure you register for the BLS course rather than selecting a different CPR or first aid program.

How Long Is Canadian Red Cross BLS Training?

The Canadian Red Cross lists the stand-alone BLS course as 4 hours. Additional certifications can extend the training time: BLS with Airway Management is listed as 5 hours, BLS with Oxygen Therapy is 5 hours, and BLS with both Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy is 6 hours.

To successfully complete the BLS course, participants must attend and participate in 100% of the course, demonstrate all required skill competencies, and achieve a minimum 75% mark on the written, closed-book knowledge evaluation.

The Canadian Red Cross issues a one-year BLS certification after successful completion. This is different from many standard first aid and CPR certifications, which are generally valid for three years.
