If you work in Mississauga and need workplace first aid certification, Basic First Aid may be the right starting point when your workplace has five or fewer people working on a shift. Under Ontario’s updated WSIB First Aid Program, Basic First Aid is the new name for what was previously called Emergency First Aid. The program is designed to give workers the essential skills needed to respond to common workplace and everyday emergencies until additional medical help is available.
At Heart2Heart First Aid CPR, we provide Basic First Aid certification training in Mississauga for individuals and workplaces that need practical first aid and CPR/AED training. As a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner and WSIB-approved trainer, we help participants develop the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to respond when an emergency happens.
When Is Basic First Aid the Right Choice?
Choosing the correct first aid course starts with understanding your workplace requirements.
Under the updated WSIB First Aid Program, workplaces covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act with five or fewer people working on any one shift must have at least one person with a Basic First Aid certificate. For workplaces with six or more people working on a shift, at least one person must have an Intermediate First Aid certificate.
That distinction matters if you are responsible for arranging workplace training in Mississauga.
For example, a small office, shop, studio, professional practice, or other workplace with a small number of employees may need Basic First Aid rather than the more extensive Intermediate First Aid program. However, your workplace’s specific circumstances and applicable requirements should always be considered when determining the appropriate first aid coverage.
If you are unsure whether you need Basic First Aid or Intermediate First Aid, we recommend confirming your workplace requirements before registering.
What Do You Learn in Basic First Aid Training?
Basic First Aid is designed to provide essential first aid and CPR skills without requiring the longer training involved in Intermediate First Aid.
The Canadian Red Cross Basic First Aid course covers important emergency response skills, including preparing to respond, understanding the EMS system, Check-Call-Care, airway emergencies, breathing and circulation emergencies, first aid for respiratory and cardiac arrest, and wound care.
The training is not simply about memorizing information.
Participants need to demonstrate the required skills and critical steps, participate in the full course, and achieve at least 75% on the written knowledge evaluation. Successful participants receive a three-year Basic First Aid certification, along with CPR/AED certification at the applicable level.
That combination is important because an emergency does not always fit neatly into one category. Someone may experience a cardiac emergency, suffer a serious wound, have difficulty breathing, or require immediate first aid while emergency services are being contacted.
Basic First Aid and CPR: Why They Go Together
First aid and CPR are related, but they are not the same thing.
The WSIB explains that CPR training is not the same as first aid training, although an approved first aid program includes a CPR component. Ontario recognizes CPR A, CPR B, CPR C, and CPR-HCP when taken as part of an approved first aid program, depending on the requirements.
For Basic First Aid, the Canadian Red Cross offers certification with CPR A/AED or CPR C/AED. CPR Level C includes CPR skills for adults, children, and infants, while CPR Level A focuses on adults.
This is one reason it is important to look at the entire certification rather than searching only for “CPR certification Mississauga.” If your employer requires first aid certification, a CPR-only course may not satisfy the workplace requirement.
How Long Is Basic First Aid Training?
The Canadian Red Cross lists Basic First Aid as a one-day course. The full in-class option is 6.5 hours with CPR A or 7 hours with CPR C. Blended delivery is also available, combining online learning with classroom instruction.
The WSIB also states that approved blended programs can use online learning for theory, but participants must complete the required skill demonstrations in a classroom with an instructor. There are currently no online-only programs that meet the WSIB criteria for workplace first aid training.
This distinction is especially important if you find a website advertising a completely online “Ontario workplace first aid certification.” Online learning alone does not provide the required opportunity to demonstrate hands-on first aid skills.
Why Take Basic First Aid Training in Mississauga?
Mississauga is home to businesses, offices, retail operations, professional services, industrial workplaces, and many other work environments. Regardless of the type of workplace, an emergency can happen without warning.
Having a trained first aider means someone on the team has learned how to assess an emergency, activate the emergency medical system, provide appropriate first aid, and perform CPR/AED skills when required.
At Heart2Heart First Aid CPR, we focus on practical training that prepares you to respond—not simply complete a course and receive a certificate. Our instructors guide participants through the required skills so they can build confidence responding to realistic emergency situations.
We are proud to provide Canadian Red Cross first aid training in Mississauga as a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner and WSIB-approved trainer.
