First Aid & CPR Training in Whitby: New Red Cross Updates Every Learner Should Know

First Aid & CPR Training in Whitby

By Nick Rondinelli, Founder & CEO, Heart2Heart First Aid CPR Services Inc.

The Canadian Red Cross New First Aid & CPR Program introduces significant changes that make lifesaving education more inclusive, practical, and evidence-based. At Heart2Heart First Aid CPR Services, we’re proud to deliver these updated First Aid and CPR courses in Whitby and the Durham Region, ensuring residents and workplaces receive the most current Red Cross certification available.

Whether you’re renewing a Standard First Aid & CPR C certificate or taking your first Emergency First Aid course, these updates will shape how Whitby learners train and respond in real-life emergencies.

❤️ Building Confidence Through Updated Skills

The 2025 Red Cross program adds new competencies that reflect today’s health and safety realities:

  • Two-Person CPR – newly required in Standard First Aid & CPR C, giving learners realistic teamwork practice.
  • Diabetic Emergencies – now a required skill, teaching early recognition and glucose response.
  • Pelvic Injury Care – step-by-step immobilization and shock monitoring added to Standard First Aid.
  • Cuts and Scrapes (Minor Bleeding) – elevated to a required hands-on skill.
  • Naloxone Administration – exclusive to Standard First Aid CPR C, with both intranasal and intramuscular methods included.

These refinements help learners across Whitby build stronger, more practical first aid confidence.

💬 Inclusive & Modern Learning

The updated Red Cross materials now reflect the diversity of our communities:

  • Gender-neutral language using they/them pronouns
  • Illustrations with diverse skin tones and body types for more accurate recognition
  • Accessible e-learning modules with larger fonts, alt text, and screen-reader support
  • Territorial Acknowledgement guidance to open every class with respect for Indigenous lands

At Heart2Heart, inclusion and accessibility are built into every First Aid training session in Whitby.

🫁 Choking Procedures Simplified

The 2025 update refines how choking care is taught:

  • Old phrases such as “bend the person forward until the airway is parallel to the ground” and “chest thrusts just under the armpits” have been removed for clarity.
  • Learners now perform continuous cycles of five back blows and five abdominal or chest thrusts until the object is expelled or the person becomes unresponsive.
  • For infants, only back blows and chest thrusts are used.
  • After any choking incident, call 9-1-1, get an AED, and seek medical follow-up.

This straightforward approach improves confidence and consistency during airway emergencies.

🧠 Mental Health Emergencies and Responder Well-Being

One of the most meaningful additions to the 2025 Red Cross program is the stronger focus on mental health emergencies and occupational stress injury management.

  • “Mental health crisis” has been replaced with “mental health emergency”, emphasizing non-stigmatizing language.
  • Learners are introduced to the new 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline.
  • Self-care and emotional resilience are now part of responder education, ensuring helpers stay healthy while helping others.

These updates are particularly valuable for workplaces in Whitby, where mental-health awareness is increasingly central to safety programs.

⚕️ Medication Assistance & Provincial Guidance

The program now clearly distinguishes between assisting (helping someone take their own medication) and administering(giving it directly).
Only life-saving medications — asthma inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, and naloxone — may be administered by trained first aiders.

⚖️ Note: Workplace first aid attendants in Ontario and other provinces must follow their organizational and provincial regulations when assisting with medication.
