The New Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR Program has officially launched — bringing smarter skills, modern techniques, and new certification standards to First Aid and CPR training in Ottawa.
At Heart2Heart First Aid CPR Services, we’re proud to offer these updated Canadian Red Cross certification courses, ensuring every learner — from healthcare professionals to workplace safety teams — receives the most current, evidence-based First Aid and CPR training available in Canada.
🧠 New Practical Skills in First Aid & CPR Training
Ottawa learners taking Standard First Aid & CPR C, Emergency First Aid, or CPR/AED certification courses will notice several new and updated practical skills designed to improve confidence and real-world readiness.
Some of the major 2025 Red Cross updates include:
- Cuts and Scrapes (Minor Bleeding) – now a required skill in both Emergency and Standard First Aid. Participants learn how to control bleeding safely, reduce infection risks, and recognize when medical care is needed.
- Burns – updated as a required skill for all levels, with improved guidance for cooling, dressing, and managing shock.
- Pelvic Injuries – newly introduced, teaching learners to immobilize, pad, and secure the legs while monitoring circulation and shock.
- Flash Eye Injuries – now a required skill in Standard First Aid; emphasizes safe rinsing, protection, and when to refer for advanced care.
- Amputations – now a required skill competency; reinforces calm bleeding control and tissue preservation.
These hands-on updates make Ottawa First Aid courses more interactive, practical, and focused on real-life emergencies.
🌡️ Environmental and Workplace Safety Updates
Ottawa’s mix of outdoor, industrial, and office workplaces makes the new environmental illness and workplace safety updates especially relevant.
- Trench Foot has been added as a new environmental illness, focusing on prevention in cold or damp working conditions.
- Heat-Related Emergencies have been simplified — immersion from the neck down is no longer advised. Learners now focus on safe, gradual cooling with fans, water, and shade.
- Cold-Water Immersion has been removed from standard content, keeping general workplace training streamlined and relevant.
- Workplace First Aid Attendants section expanded to include hazard identification and risk assessment, aligning with modern occupational health standards.
These updates ensure First Aid and CPR training in Ottawa meets the latest national and provincial safety expectations.
💊 Medication Assistance and Naloxone
The new Red Cross update now distinguishes between assisting (guiding someone to take their own medication) and administering (directly giving it).
Only three life-saving medications may be administered by trained first aiders:
- Asthma inhalers
- Epinephrine auto-injectors
- Naloxone — included only in Standard First Aid & CPR C
Naloxone can be given even if the person is unresponsive, using either intranasal or intramuscular methods.
⚖️ Important: Workplace first aid attendants must always follow provincial regulations. For example, in Alberta, attendants may assist but not administer medication unless authorized.
These clear distinctions ensure all participants act safely, confidently, and within their professional limits.
🫀 CPR, AED, and Circulation Updates
The CPR and cardiac emergency content has been streamlined for clarity and ease of performance:
- “Sex” removed as an uncontrollable risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
- “Vision problems in one or both eyes” added to stroke signs and symptoms.
- FAST method (Face, Arm, Speech, Time) emphasized for stroke recognition.
- Simplified CPR instructions – scripted counting wording removed for smoother compressions.
- AED content simplified – detailed heart rhythm science removed; learners now focus on recognizing that AEDs deliver shocks only when necessary.
These changes help Ottawa learners gain practical, evidence-based CPR certification that aligns with the latest resuscitation science.
