First Aid Instructor (full development program)

Overall, the Instructor Development process is broken down into five steps:

Step 1: Evaluate skills and check prerequisites

In this stage, Instructor candidates work with an Instructor Development Center to confirm that they have a strong understanding of the typical first aid skills needed to be successful as an Instructor and have met the program prerequisites. It is important that they come prepared to demonstrate first-aid skills without coaching.   They must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have a valid participant certificate for the program they wish to teach.

Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction

Consists of both an online and a classroom component, where they apply the fundamentals of instruction alongside an Instructor Trainer. This segment of their development will focus on the role of an Instructor (using a learner-centered approach to first aid education) and considers both educational principles and best practices. It will also consider the responsibilities of an Instructor as a representative of the Canadian Red Cross when preparing for a course, while teaching a course, and following a course. This step includes knowledge and application-focused lessons (including the opportunity to complete microteaching segments with their peers).

  • – Online: 8 hours, self-paced (You will receive a PIN number and portal link upon registration)
  • Classroom ratio: Minimum 4 candidates, Maximum 8 candidates (DAY 1 / DAY 2)
  • Classroom: 2 days (14 h 30 m teaching time)
  • Facilitator: Any FA Program Instructor Trainer
  • It is recommended that Instructor candidates have at least 2 weeks to complete the online component

Step 3: Discipline-specific classroom component

Once they decide which program they would like to instruct (First Aid & CPR, Wilderness & Remote, or Professional Responder), they must attend the corresponding discipline-specific classroom component. This segment of their development will focus on applying their skills as an Instructor within the discipline they will be offering – it includes exploring and understanding the learner (participants) they will be supporting, and familiarizing themselves with the course content and teaching tools. This step focuses largely on application and will include the opportunity to complete microteaching segments with their peers (involves pre-course work).

  • The Discipline Specific classroom segment for this course is for First Aid & CPR Instructors.
  • Classroom ratio: Minimum 4 candidates. Maximum 8 candidates
  • Classroom: 2 days (14 h 30 m)  DAY 3 / DAY 4
  • The focus is to apply learnings to a specific learner/program

Step 4: Teaching Experience

The Teaching Experience consists of an online component and a classroom component. The online component details what to expect during the teaching experience and guides the time that they spend preparing for it. The classroom component provides the experience of teaching in a dynamic classroom environment. This is where they will apply what they have learned throughout the Instructor Development Program with actual participants. Working alongside a Teaching Experience Supervisor they will demonstrate an ability to support a participant’s learning experience.  There are elements that the Teaching Experience Supervisor will be looking for from them during this step – including planning in advance of the course, and teaching knowledge and skill-based lessons during the course. This segment of their development allows them to continue constructing their professional identity and apply their learnings while authentically engaging in the role of an Instructor.

  • Online: 30-45 minutes, self-paced
  • Candidates can attempt a teaching experience in the classroom up to three times, each time only focusing on the areas needing to improve
  • Facilitator: Teaching Experience Supervisor or Instructor Trainer
  • Candidates have one year to complete the teaching experience

Step 5: Certification

Following successful completion of the Teaching Experience, they will become certified as an Instructor within the discipline of their choosing. Instructor certification is valid for three years. Prior to expiration, Instructors will attend a recertification course in order to engage in professional development and maintain certification for an additional three years.

– Certification Cards will be sent to the candidate directly once teaching experience forms are received by the Red Cross
