First Aid for Fainting: What to Do When Someone Passes Out

Fainting can be sudden, unexpected, and alarming. Whether it happens in the workplace, at home, or out in public, knowing how to respond can make all the difference. At Heart 2 Heart First Aid CPR, we provide first aid and CPR training across Canada, including in Toronto, so you’re prepared to act quickly and confidently in emergencies.

Here’s what you need to know about fainting and how to handle it safely.

What Causes Fainting?

Fainting—also called syncope—occurs when there’s a temporary drop in blood flow to the brain. This causes a brief loss of consciousness, often followed by a quick recovery.

Common causes include:

  • Emotional shock or stress
  • Standing or sitting in one position for too long (especially in heat)
  • Hunger or low blood sugar
  • Exhaustion or overexertion
  • Pain or injury

When someone faints, their heart rate may drop momentarily before stabilizing again. Most people regain consciousness within a minute or two.

What to Do if Someone Feels Faint

If a person says they feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint:

  1. Help them lie down right away
Prevent a fall by helping them to the ground safely.
  2. Elevate their legs
Raise the legs slightly to promote blood flow back to the brain.
  3. Ensure fresh air
Open a window or ask bystanders to give the person space. Loosen tight clothing around the neck or waist.
  4. Monitor their condition
Watch their facial expression and breathing. If they begin to recover, assist them into a sitting position slowly.

What to Do if Someone Has Fainted

If a person has already fainted:

  1. Lay them flat and elevate their legs
This helps restore blood flow to the brain.
  2. Loosen tight clothing
Especially around the neck or chest.
  3. Tap or speak loudly to revive them
Gently tap their shoulder and call their name.
  4. If unresponsive for over 2 minutes, call 911
This could signal a more serious medical issue. Be ready to begin CPR if they stop breathing or don’t respond.
  5. If they vomit or bleed from the mouth
Roll them onto their side into the recovery position to prevent choking.

When to Seek Medical Help

Call for professional medical help if the person:

  • Hit their head when they fainted
  • Has a known heart condition
  • Is pregnant
  • Has a serious illness or chronic condition
  • Experiences confusion, chest pain, or slurred speech
  • Faints frequently or for no known reason
